The principle of action of serum separator gel

Serum separation gel is added to the bottom of the test tube. After blood samples are injected and the blood coagulates, the test tube is placed in a centrifuge. Under the action of centrifugal force, the network structure is destroyed and it becomes a fluid with low viscosity. When the centrifugal force disappears, the network structure is reformed and it returns to being a fluid with high viscosity. This property is called thixotropy. Utilizing this characteristic, the separating gel forms an isolation layer between the serum and the blood clot, keeping the serum in its original state without any change. This isolation layer adheres tightly to the wall of the test tube. The serum can be directly aspirated by an automatic analyzer in its original state, or it can be stored in a refrigerator or transported over long distances without affecting the test results. It also avoids the influence of fibrin and hemolysis. When the separating gel and the coagulated blood are centrifuged in the same test tube, generally the specific gravity of serum is about 1.02, that of the blood clot is about 1.08, and the specific gravity of the separating gel is maintained at about 1.05. Under the action of centrifugal force, the separating gel forms a gel-like isolation layer between the serum and the blood clot to separate the serum and the blood clot. Thus, the yield of serum is increased, and the serum is preserved in its original state, simplifying the clinical testing process and improving work efficiency. In addition, the whole process from injecting the blood sample into the blood collection tube, separating the serum, directly aspirating the serum with the analyzer, storing the blood sample to disposing of waste is carried out in the same tube. This avoids contamination of the operator by the blood sample, prevents infection by viruses in the blood, reduces medical waste, and improves work efficiency.
